We love day-tripping to Massachusetts beaches in summer. There are so many area places to enjoy out of doors when the weather is nice like this. The kids love Hampton Beach (NH, but not much of a drive unless traffic is bad) and the Cape (not the easiest place to get to). But there are little unsung swimming spots all over the state.

When we were kids, Plum Island was a favorite destination. It was relatively quiet, and so beautiful. Wingaersheek Beach in Gloucester has seen a lot of us over the summers – it is truly beautiful there.
Church’s Beach, Cuttyhunk Island is listed on Islands.com 30 Best Undiscovered Beaches:

Church’s beach, Cuttyhunk Island, Massachusetts- Hitch a ride on a golf cart to the Cuttyhunk Yacht Club and then follow the sand road (pick a few wildflowers along the way) to Church’s Beach. This west-facing strand is great for late-day rays and sunsets. Gentle waves make for good swimming.

We have spent several wonderful summers exploring the Massachusetts State Park System on very short money – the price of a summer membership is $35 per year for MA residents.

Or check out this trail journal – we go swimming in the Squannacook (although we set down in a different spot) and can vouch for how fun the rope swing is.

Looks wonderful- click on their flower to go to their website. This is at the Eastern States Exposition, 1305 Memorial Ave., West Springfield.

Another flower show is happening at the other end of the state at the same time. The Boston Flower and Garden Show will be from March 24 to March 28 2010 at the Seaport World Trade Center. There are all sorts of smaller events within the larger event – check out the site for details.

Don’t want to be tied to a particular weekend? Tower Hill Botanical Garden offers an ongoing calendar of events. Its Spring Open House is April 11th, and is free. Their hours and contact information are online.

Another must-see for any time of the year is the Arnold Arboretum. The grounds are open from sunrise to sunset every day (Visitor Center hours are more limited) and admission is free (donations accepted). The Arboretum is located in Boston on 125 Arborway and you can take the train in and use the subway instructions that are available on the site to find it. Lilac Sunday is on May 9 this year- this is a hugely popular event and you are advised to use public transportation. If you want to drive, parking at Alewife and picking up the T there might be an option.

The Butterfly Place in Westford, MA is another place to find color- from the native and exotic butterflies that are everywhere inside as well as from the flowers that feed them. This local gem is reopening on March 21 (call first or check site). If you dress in brightly colored clothes, the butterflies will sometimes land on you, so they say- and it seems to work!

Trying to figure out something fun to do in Leominster/Fitchburg or close by?? Try these! Most of these are free.

Monoosnoc Ridge Trail (see description on link at “Leominster”)

Fitchburg Art Museum

Visit the Falls at Willard Brook- when it’s warm, bring stuff for a cookout in the fire pits

Nashua River Rail Trail this starts with parking in Ayer, and is open to biking, hiking, cross-country skiing and equestrian

Looking for something with a little more elevation? Try climbing or biking Mount Wachusett, climbing Mount Watatic, or for the adventurous there is the 21 mile Wapack trail- check these out in better weather.

Same thing with Leominster State Forest- swimming here, great hiking, and cookout areas

Pick up a course at Mount Wachusett Community College (Leominster location) or Fitchburg State College. Fitchburg State College has an events schedule as well, with many events open to the general public

Check out the Activities Brochure on the Leominster Town Site

In better weather, check out Purgatory Chasm (a little drive, but worth it). Bring your cookout stuff here, too

Explore the Lincoln Woods Wildlife Sanctuary, one of Massachusetts Audubon Society’s properties

Check out the Leominster Historical Society and the Fitchburg Historical Society- they have ongoing exhibits and programs.

My kids have been to the Coco Key Water Resort and loved it

Take advantage of the programs at Fitchburg Public Library and Leominster Public Library- there are always free programs being offered for both adults and children

Keep the window to the Fitchburg Pride events calendar open on your computer to catch current happenings in town

Here’s a nice little site for when it warms up- call these places first to determine hours of operation.
