Things to do on a snow day

So the teachers have been talking about the possibility of school being canceled. The weather report at dinner time hinted that snow might start in time for the morning commute. The kids are excited as can be, and wear their pajamas to bed inside out or put a white crayon in the freezer in the hopes that this will magically bring snow.
And guess what? Either the ritual or some other greater plan brings buckets and piles of snow, with more on the way and no chance of making an escape by highway. How do you alleviate cabin fever and keep the kids busy and happy?
Here are a list of links to sites with ideas that will help to make the day go by quickly.
For older children: The Vlog Brothers have created a series of videos that are, literally, an online conversation that is funny AND intelligent. The conversation is brother-to-brother, but we are invited to listen in. You may want to reserve their special brand of humor for your older teens.
Links for ideas for younger and older children: This site at Squidoo has 25 ideas for a range of ages. I love the idea of breaking out old board games (and maybe making up different rules!) and most kids love putting on shows. You can tack a sheet up over a hallway to create a theater curtain for them to enter and exit their performance.
Still bored? Get out a deck of cards! We go through times when we play all of the time, then get busy and forget. Great games- for younger ones, Concentration and Go Fish are fun. Slap Jack is good for all ages, and  Spit can easily become an obsession with older children,  although it doesn’t always bring out a person’s best side. Cribbage is great because it improves strategic thinking and math skills, as well as being fun. And it is always exciting to “skunk” your parents!!!
