This is officially the 100th post for Towne & Country, Realtors’ blog.
We have been reading a lot about human dynamics particularly as they relate to marketing, and it always comes back to community.
When people describe themselves they almost always do so in the context of groups that they are part of. If you were asked to describe yourself in a few words, it would be impossible to do so without mentioning the various work, geographical and interest communities that you are part of.
Watching people as they become involved in the social media space is to a large extent watching them as they experiment with, create and reformulate communities. And each online space has its own ambiance.
Twitter’s brief messages, use of “handles” and free-for-all format is reminiscent of CB Radio communication. But all of the online social media spaces have more in common with CB Radio than print communication. Facebook, YouTube, twitter – they are for sharing information interactively as opposed to providing information feeds.
The best use of social media by businesses is not to try to force social/new media into a static form. Instead, best use is to foster connection and community, allow sharing, and be a conduit of education through that community. I think it is less about establishing yourself as a trusted advisor and more about being there as a community catalyst.
The idea behind social media is nothing new. It’s just happening in a new way. Instead of being destinations, the country store, party lines, CB radio, twitter, Facebook, YouTube and the others are only vehicles.
The destination itself is the community.
