Day 2- Celebrate Spring!!!
As the ground warms in the Spring, the amphibians wake up. Salamanders and frogs cease hibernating and head to vernal pools to lay their eggs.
Monday- with the rain predicted and the warmer temperatures- will likely be a “Big Night” event. In Massachusetts, roads are closed in places and volunteers come out to help the movement of the salamanders to the places that they need to get to to spawn.
From the “Big Night” site in Bolton, MA:
Rain is in the forecast, the temperatures have warmed, the ice is melting which means one thing to wood frogs and mole salamanders. It means “Big Night” is about to occur. Big Night refers to a very special occasion that occurs at night in the early spring rain.
Curious? This is THE night the wood frogs and mole salamanders come out of hibernation and head to their birth pools to mate. This can be a dangerous journey for them, crossing busy roads, and moving past wild animals and our pets. The action and the woods come alive announcing that spring has come! Within two days the mating is over and these animals go back to their secretive underground homes. This is why we hardly see these animals throughout the rest of the year. It is cool just to stop and watch.
You can call the number posted on the site to join other nature lovers in observing this phenomenon, or check here to find a location in your area.
First Night marked the beginning of our year, but Big Night marks the true beginning of the year.
